McKoy Crew R-09
McKoy Crew R-09 Summary
The McKoy Replacement Crew arrived at North Pickenham during May of '44. After some in-house training they were assigned to the 856th BS on the 28th. We don't know what crew they replaced. They began flying combat missions on 8 Jun 44.
By our count, the Crew flew 7 missions. We don't know if their were any substitutions made on any of the missions. They were flying a short 9-man crew when they were downed.
On 20 Jun 44, they participated in the raid on the oil refineries at Politz. The 492nd was met with heavy resistance by the Luftwaffe before reaching the target. While still flying over the Baltic Sea near Rugen Island, the McKoy Crew was hit by cannon fire from an Me-410. Although the ship was already on fire and was going down, small arms fire continued to riddle the ship. A few were able to bail out, but only one man survived. 8 KIA, 1 POW, MACR 6775.
